YouTube Shorts are viewed over 70 billion times every day. So, it’s no wonder that Google is encouraging YouTubers to capitalize on this trend.

Thanks to a potential new YouTube Shorts tool, which is currently being tested “with a small number of creators,” users might be able to transform key moments from their long-form videos into Shorts.

YouTube explained the experiment in full on a Google Support page. “We’re experimenting with a feature that lets creators easily cut out engaging segments from long-form videos on YouTube and instantly publish them as separate 16:9 videos,” the platform wrote.

“If you’re a creator in the experiment, you will see the option to ‘Create a video highlight’ in the video editor tool in YouTube Studio Desktop.”

As with all YouTube experiments, there is no guarantee that this feature will go on to be a fully-fledged part of YouTube.

YouTube Shorts: A Look Back

Nonetheless, 2024 was a good year for YouTube Shorts. In April, Alphabet, the company behind Google and YouTube, held an earnings call. On this call, Phillip Schindler, Google’s chief business officer, said that Shorts has seen “significant growth.”

Moreover, in a blog post that month, YouTube Shorts also revealed that more than 25% of channels in the YouTube Partner Program could monetize their Shorts through ads.

Hopefully, this feature will become official and help bolster YouTube Shorts’ upward trajectory in the year ahead. At the very least, creators now have yet another tool to utilize in sharing their work.
