Instagram has announced that it is introducing new metrics for Reels users. These updates will help creators better understand their audiences and how their viewership is evolving.

The first metric the company is introducing is ‘View Rate,’ which, as the name implies, measures the percentages of followers and non-followers who continue to watch your Reel in the first three seconds.

The second metric, ‘Views Over Time,’ records how many views your Reel has amassed so far in comparison to the average views your Reels normally get in the same time period. As with ‘View Rate,’ you’ll also be able to divide viewers into followers and non-followers.

Finally, Instagram is offering “actionable, personalized tips” based on your content to help you contextualize why your content is performing better or worse than usual.

“As a creator, you want to know why your content is performing the way it is and how you can learn from your results,” Instagram said in the post description. “That’s why we’re now giving you access to more metrics and actionable tips in your Insights.”

The new metrics for Reels are live now. These updates come on the heels of Instagram offering creators thousands of dollars to switch to Reels from apps like TikTok.

Ultimately, it’s pretty clear that Instagram is making these bold moves because the shaky fate of TikTok leaves plenty of room for the platform to swoop in and dominate the short-form video market. The question is, will it work?
