X competitor Bluesky now allows video uploads of up to three minutes. The platform announced this change among a slew of other updates on Monday, March 10.

Up until this point, Bluesky has only allowed videos that are sixty seconds long. This has been the case since September, which was when the decentralized social media platform introduced videos for the first time.

As TechCrunch pointed out, this move has helped align Bluesky with competing apps like X and Threads. While Threads allows videos up to five minutes long, X allows non-Premium users to upload videos up to two minutes and twenty seconds long.

According to TechCrunch, this news will also benefit apps like Bluescreen and Skylight. These apps are reportedly working to become the “TikTok for Bluesky.” TechCrunch notes that these apps are looking to achieve this in two different ways. One way is through a client for Bluesky, and the other is a separate app built on the same decentralized network as Bluesky.

Beyond the main announcement, Bluesky’s update includes features that improve user experience. These include a separate DM inbox for messages from non-followers, easier account muting, better moderation tools, clearer error reporting, and a more tablet-friendly layout.

“With every update, we’re aiming to make the Internet less toxic, more fun, and more in your control,” Bluesky said.
