As TikTok’s future remains unclear, another app has staked its claim as the place to be for short-form video content. This time, it’s an app called Neptune. According to TechCrunch, the platform is currently in beta. It has 970 testers, and 400,000 people are already on its waitlist.
The outlet also claims that the app will be available in the App Store next week. As for Google Play, users will have to wait another six months.
Like other platforms, Neptune features a scrollable, vertical video feed — but it does have a few unique qualities too. While the app has an algorithm, it’s more led by the creator’s interests and content quality.
“We put the power back in the hands of [the creators] who actually built the internet,” chief marketing officer Timur Tugberk said to TechCrunch. “Not the corporations, not the algorithms. Neptune is for connection, not clout.”
It also enables users to hide their likes and followers metrics. However, the option to keep these metrics up remains. Neptune also presents an opportunity for creators, as the app confirmed to TechCrunch that it will offer a number of revenue streams to creators, including tips, livestreams, and subscriptions.
Another interesting feature is ‘Hop Back,’ which enables users to pick up where they left off when watching a video rather than having to start it all over again.
When testing the app, TechCrunch noted that it currently lacks in-app editing tools and direct messaging. However, Neptune says that it’s currently working on adding features like livestream capability, music integrations, and the ability to make playlists.
“I spent years working with independent creators, both as an influencer myself and later helping brands,” founder Ashley Darling told TechCrunch. “I kept hearing the same thing from creators and users, ‘I miss when social media was fun. When it was about creativity, not competition.’ So, instead of waiting for a platform to listen, I built one.”
