On March 28, Elon Musk announced that X users with a certain amount of verified subscribers will receive Premium and Premium+ features for free — whether they like it or not.
Naturally, Musk announced this move in a post on X, writing: “Going forward, all X accounts with over 2500 verified subscriber followers will get Premium features for free and accounts with over 5000 will get Premium+ for free.”
X Premium features, which usually cost $8 a month, include the ability to write longer posts, the (much sought-after) ability to edit posts, and reduced ads. Premium+ features include access to Grok, an AI model designed to help answer users’ questions.
But most importantly, both X Premium tiers include the blue tick: a symbol that used to represent importance and prestige before Musk made it a laughing stock.
Making the blue tick available to anyone who paid diminished its value as a status symbol, but with this latest announcement, it feels like Musk is trying to scramble some of that status back.
This is also what he did when he gave a bunch of celebrities blue ticks without them asking, but ultimately, this didn’t work. And we don’t think this will either.
