The election is now just days away, and needless to say, TikTok has had a lot of fun with it. From fancams to Kamala Harris’ brat era, Gen Z has made their political alliances known in so many new and creative ways. And the “cancel out” vote trend is just another example.

What is the ‘cancel out’ vote trend?

The trend involves mostly left-wing TikTokers heading to the polls while declaring that they are voting to “cancel out” the votes of their more conservative loved ones. Examples include family members and partners.

The most popular (now-deleted) example features Hope Walz, the daughter of Democratic VP candidate Tim Walz, saying she has to cancel out her father’s vote. Don’t worry though — she made it clear she was joking, and added:

“Jk my dad is literally running for Vice President to protect the rights of women and girls, tackle climate change, lower costs for families, and make Kamala Harris the next President of the United States.”

While the trend is lighthearted, it does have a grain of truth in it. A recent study found that 30% of Americans are in a relationship with someone with opposing political views.

It’s worth mentioning that it’s not technically possible to “cancel out” someone else’s vote, but it is an entertaining trend nonetheless.
