After influencer Haley Kalil sparked outrage for repeating that utterance at the Met Gala amid the current situation in Gaza, the chopping block is back. And this time, creators are taking on the roles of judge, jury and executioner.
What is the ‘digitine’?
It was TikToker @ladyfromtheoutside who first coined the word “digitine,” as she lambasted Haley for her “ignorant” use of the soundbite from actress Kristen Dunst in the movie Marie Antionette.
“It’s time for the people to conduct what I want to call a ‘digital guillotine.’ A ‘digitine,’ if you will.” she said.
“It’s time to block all the celebrities, influencers and wealthy socialites who are not using their resources to help those in dire need,” she said. “We gave them their platforms. It’s time to take it back, take our views away, our likes, our comments, our money, by blocking them on all social media and digital platforms.”
After @ladyfromtheoutside’s call to action, users have been sharing their own version of the “digitine” on TikTok, using hashtags like #blockout, #blockout2024 or #celebrityblockout.
One TikToker who has gone viral for her daily blockout choices is Kimberly Online. She shared her reasoning in an interview with the London Evening Standard.
“So many of these celebrities [who] have millions upon millions of followers are actively choosing to stay silent and often help normalise the terrible things happening across the world,” Kimberley said. “I want to be a beacon of light and be the complete opposite of that.”
