Once again, it looks like leading creators have fallen just a little bit short of Emmy glory. Nominations for the 76th annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced on Wednesday, but a few major YouTube names were left out.
As reported by NBC, iconic YouTube series like “Hot Ones,” “Chicken Shop Date,” and “Good Mythical Morning” all missed out on nominations in the short-form comedy, drama, and variety series categories.
All three of these shows have seen explosive success, with Chicken Shop Date’s Amelia Dimoldenberg even appearing at the Oscars off the back of the show’s fame.
According to Variety, all three of these shows were on the short-form ballots to be considered for nominations. But sadly, the YouTubers’ star power wasn’t enough for any of these shows to make the cut.
Should YouTubers be nominated at the Emmys?
Earlier this year, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan wrote a column appealing for YouTubers to be considered at the Primetime Emmy Awards. He said that they’re “breaking boundaries” and that they represent “a new era of entertainment.”
YouTube series have been nominated and even won Emmys before. However, these were for regional or the Creative Art Emmy categories, which are less well-known than the Primetime Emmys. Yet, as Passionfruit contributor Lon Harris argued in May, this doesn’t make them any less worthy of respect.
“You might not expect MrBeast to stand on the same stage as Jeremy Allen White,” YouTube CEO Mohan wrote. “But if you think creators are just recording vlogs from their bedrooms, then I have some big news. Creators have writers’ rooms, production teams, and business strategies.”
