On Oct. 2, Reuters reported that the EU Commission requested information from three of the biggest social media platforms: TikTok, YouTube, and Snapchat.
Specifically, the EU Commission wants to investigate how algorithms recommend content to users, including information that, according to Reuters, could amplify “system risks.”
Examples of these risks include content related to elections, mental health, and the protection of minors.
Why does the EU Commission want information on social media algorithms?
These requests are made under the Digital Services Act, a regulation that applies across EU countries.
In a statement to Reuters, the EU added that these requests to the platforms “also concern the platforms’ measures to mitigate the potential influence of their recommender systems on the spread of illegal content, such as promoting illegal drugs and hate speech.”
In addition, the commission told the outlet that it had requested extra information from TikTok about extra measures they took. Specifically, measures the app took to stop bad actors from manipulating the platform and measures to reduce risks related to civic discourse and ongoing elections.
According to Reuters, Snapchat, YouTube, and TikTok have until Nov. 15 to provide this information. After that, the commission will consider what’s next, such as penalties like fines.
