After just 11 days of streaming nonstop, Kai Cenat broke the Twitch subscription record for the second time. On Nov. 11, during his “Mafiathon 2” marathon, Cenat celebrated reaching 327,000 paid subs, beating out vtuber Ironmouse’s record from last month.
The New York native has managed to crack the code on pulling in subs, using celebrity and viral moments to keep his momentum at max speed.
From the start Cenat’s stream was a gala affair, with the event announced with a trailer featuring Kim Kardashian, who I’m not entirely sure even knew who Cenat was.
Once it started, traditional media celebs were a constant show of force in the rented-out mansion. Some were low-key, like rapper Denzel Curry, who just chatted on stream. Others were way more interactive, like Miranda Cosgrove, who joined Cenat to recreate her Nickelodeon show “iCarly.” My personal favorite had to be Cenat going to Snoop Dogg’s compound and getting a guided tour through nearly every room in the house.
From the very beginning of the marathon, Cenat plugged into the internet consciousness to make sure posh cameos didn’t drown out those genuine vibes. While sleeping, Cenat had on Malik, who went viral during the NPC craze on TikTok as Spider-Man’s Miles Morales.
His skill set transitioned over flawlessly, congratulating subs and dropping catchphrases whenever gifts were shown in chat. For some larger donations, loud car horns or live drum sets immediately woke Cenat up.
It’s clear from watching the stream that Cenat has mastered live streaming. It doesn’t matter when you tune in, there’s always tens of thousands of viewers watching something interesting happen. It incentivizes users to share the word (and clips, causing the stream to gain even more notoriety.
His marathons have only grown in scope since he started streaming in 2018. Over the summer, Cernat spent 167 hours beating just one boss in the incredibly difficult game “Elden Ring.” His production value was unmatched, covered in suits of armor and props for when he decided to conquer the title.
Creating a consistent community that wants to throw money at you requires putting in the effort yourself. These large-scale productions give viewers a reason to tune in, excited to catch whatever nonsense or heartfelt moments before they end up clipped and spread around social media.
It’s not easy, clearly, Cenat has a team that can help him put all of this together, but the payoff is massive. He’s not even halfway through the month, and the record has already been shattered into a million little pieces.
