Once again, the Kamala Harris campaign is looking to break the internet. The campaign group has launched its own Twitch channel ahead of Harris’s democratic nomination acceptance speech on August 22.
The account, which is under the handle “kamalaharris,” has already amassed 2,000 followers.
“The VP’s address tonight will be one of the biggest moments of the entire campaign thus far — and we’re making sure we’re bringing her live to voters wherever they may be, Twitch included,” Seth Schuster, spokesperson for Kamala Harris, told WIRED.
“Our job as the campaign is to break through a historically personalized media landscape, taking the VP and her vision for the future directly to the hardest to reach voters and those who will decide this election.”
A chronically online campaign
This Twitch account is the final touch for the Kamala Harris campaign which, for the most part, has been chronically online.
According to WIRED, the campaign hired 175 content creators to help develop the nominee’s social media voice. Among other things, this strategy has led to 1.3 million X followers, 820,000 Instagram followers, and 3.8 million TikTok followers.
In its own way, the Trump campaign has also been trying to appeal to netizens — but with streams on Kick and interviews with the likes of Adin Ross and Logan Paul, we can assume he’s aiming for a decisively different crowd.
From coconut trees to brat summer memes, the Harris-Waltz campaign took a gamble. But undoubtedly, it’s been paid off, with a New York Times/Siena poll putting Harris 18 points ahead of Trump among voters under 30.
