TikTok sensation Khaby Lame was detained and “voluntarily deported” after remaining in the US on an expired visa. According to Dexerto, rumors started to emerge on June 6.
Numerous social media accounts claimed that Lame was on the list of ICE’s online locator of detained persons. They claim that according to this locator, Lame was being held in Henderson Detention Center, Nevada, on June 6. However, as of June 7, this information is reportedly no longer on the website.
Based in Italy, Lame, who has the most TikTok followers of all time, frequently travels to the US. His latest excursion began on April 30, and he attended the Met Gala five days later.
While Lame hasn’t commented on the situation, he has posted content since, such as a sponsored post for Kellogg’s on June 7.
Authorities confirmed to Complex that Lame had been detained. “U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained Seringe Khabane Lame, 25, a citizen of Italy, June 6, at the Harry Reid International Airport, Las Vegas, Nevada for immigration violations,” a spokesperson for ICE said. “He entered the United States April 30 and overstayed the terms of his visa. Lame was granted voluntary departure June 6 and has since departed the U.S.”
This comes amid a lot of political tension surrounding immigration. On June 8, Donald Trump deployed the National Guard to ICE protesters in LA. As pointed out by Complex, this amassed heavy controversy, with many arguing that the authorities were too heavy-handed.
