Meta’s ban on new political ads is set to continue for several days. Even after the polls for the US election close. According to Axios, the tech company informed advertisers of this on Nov. 4.
Axios reports that, initially, this ban was meant to expire at 11:59pm PT on Election Day, Nov. 5. However, the outlet reports that Meta decided to extend this ban in order to prevent confusion or potential misinformation while the votes are getting counted.
What political ads are banned on Meta during the election?
It’s worth noting that under Meta’s existing ad policies, ads that attempt to claim victory or delegitimize the election are banned. Furthermore, if ads attempt to run with this kind of rhetoric, they should be automatically blocked by Meta.
In a website post, Meta added that banning ads like this is “consistent with our approach during the United States elections in 2020 and 2022.”
It’s worth noting that while new ads will be rejected, existing ads will still be permitted to run. More specifically, ads that ran prior to midnight on Oct. 29, cleared an ad review, and got at least one impression will be able to continue.
According to Euro News, ad owners will still be able to make changes related to scheduling, budget, and bidding-related requests on these political ads.
However, the outlet also reports that this period of restriction prevents advertisers from removing “paid for” ad disclaimers, duplicating their most popular ads, and editing their target audience.
