Do Creators Care About This New AI Tool?

CREATOR NEWSLETTER

Yesterday, Adobe announced over 100 product updates, which you can read about here. The most notable announcement was the launch of its Firefly video model, which Adobe is advertising as the first “commercially safe” video generation AI tool. Aka, Adobe claims this new tool is trained on fully licensed, legally acquired content.

Based on some surveys from earlier this year, it seems like most creators are using AI tools in some capacity, albeit with skepticism. In one May 2024 surveyof 1,500 creators, 84% of creators said they use AI tools like Firefly in their workflow.

However, the “quality” of AI-generated content concerned 48.9% of creators surveyed, a “lack of originality” in AI content worried 38.5%, and plagiarism by AI tools concerned 33% of creators.

That’s not to mention rampant issues with deepfakes and violations of name, image, and likeness rights, nor the concerns that AI will replace creative jobs. If you remember the creator response to the debut of Sora, Open AI’s video generation software, the backlash was swift and fierce, with many creators worried about how it may disrupt labor demands for fields like stock footage videography.

Perhaps that’s why Adobe has taken a unique approach, at least attempting to address the issue of plagiarism with copyright-cleared AI training. That attempt to foster goodwill with creators could work… especially when paired with a growing sense of futility that generative AI is here to stay.
