CREATOR NEWSLETTER
Issue #252 | July 4, 2024
It’s 4th of July once again, somehow. Didn’t we just do this? Talk about how working through a holiday sucked, because #employmentprivilege is a real thing. It can come off very “Hello fellow teens,” to start a newsletter for content creators by letting you know that, in my humble opinion, no one should have to clock in to do work on a federally scheduled holiday.
“Put down that phone and give yourself a social media sabbath,” a smug, me-circa-2014 might have told you, guilty of the cardinal sin of a New York Times inferred quote by association. “I’ve been ever so much happier since I began putting my screen down at 11 pm est every night to wind down before bed, a habit I picked up on my travels abroad.” I’d really draw out those vowels, possibly with a transcontinental accent. Ah-braaaaawd.
Me circa-today knows better. I spent several years as a full-time content creator and the past year employed at Passionfruit, trying to make sense of the creator ecosystem (don’t call it an economy, we’ll get to that in a bit): the business of online content and the labor force behind it. Specifically, the second part.
