TikTok can make stars out of small businesses. Users love feeling like they’re supporting an independent entrepreneur in their journey to profitability and success. However, virality and hype on TikTok can come fast, and sometimes business owners try to meet that demand too quickly without the proper resources to scale.
Perhaps there is no better example than the whole Pink Sauce debacle that has taken social media by storm over the past few days. Chef Pii, a private chef, began promoting her concoction in June and quickly started selling bottles of sauce to excited viewers who wanted in on the trend. However, TikTok users began to question the chef’s food safety practices and the shipping methods for the sauce, which appeared to be a perishable item with few preservatives. Chef Pii addressed the controversy in an interview with Passionfruit reporter Grace Stanley.
