There’s nothing worse than working hard on a funny tweet, dance, song, recipe, video, or joke and having it stolen. On the internet, it’s easy to steal, borrow, or ride off the success of others’ ideas without facing any consequences. And despite creators often preaching “authenticity” as a way to achieve viral success, the internet often rewards mimicry more than originality.
Frequently, it’s LGBTQ and BIPOC creators who report their ideas being co-opted by others. Despite their work deeply impacting mainstream internet culture, marginalized creators often don’t reap the rewards of their ingenuity.
This week, Passionfruit Contributor Charlotte Colombo spoke with Isabella (@blizzy_mcguire), a trans creator who struggled as others gained media attention and financial success based a term she coined: “Christian Girl Autumn.”
