👸Creator Trolls Elon Musk

Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover has been certainly been tumultuous. Less than two weeks into his executive reign, users are abandoning the platform, advertisers are pausing their Twitter campaigns, employees are being laid off or resigning, and creator Hank Green tweeted Musk “has no idea how the creator economy works.”

Importantly, Musk announced Twitter will be revamping its $8-per-month subscription service Twitter Blue, which will now include access to blue verification checkmarks for non-authenticated paying subscribers. Previously, blue verification checkmarks were only available to notable public figures, including popular creators and influencers, and required authentification of a person’s identity. The news sparked notable critical responses, including from creator economy investor Mark Cuban.

This week, Passionfruit contributor Jacob Seitz shares the story of sitcom star and Twitter influencer Valerie Bertinelli, who changed her name to Elon Musk to retweet posts from Democratic political candidates during this week’s mid-term elections, sparking debate about the future of vertification and misinformation on the platform.
