CREATOR ECONOMY NEWSLETTER
Issue 44 | June 16, 2022
Creators have struggled against YouTube’s strike system and demonetization processes for years. Following the 2017 Adpocalypse, YouTube began vigilantly taking ads off of videos considered to be brand unsafe. This, coupled with a copyright strike system that can often be abused, has left creators extra cautious and caused them to alter their content to avoid controversial topics or statements—or else risk losing a chunk of their income.
However, amid tight enforcement around community and copyright guidelines, some creators believe bad actors still slip through the cracks. This is the issue at the heart of the recent feud between creators the Act Man and QuantumTV, in which Act Man called for the deplatforming of Quantum for the alleged abuse of copyright takedowns, use of hate speech, and harassment. YouTube reportedly reviewed the offending content and determined that action against Quantum was unnecessary. Act Man then sent a satirical tweet in frustration and joked about doxing YouTube employees, referencing Quantum allegedly doxing him. YouTube swiftly demonetized him, sparking outrage from the community and causing #JusticeForActMan to trend on Twitter. Passionfruit contributor Steven Asarch spoke to the YouTuber and broke down the saga below.
