On the surface, Roblox might look like a simple computer game for children — but that couldn’t be more wrong. It’s actually a thriving hub of creativity, and, arguably, one of the biggest platforms in the creator economy.
The Metaverse-like sandbox game allows users to build their own video games and other digital assets. And if these features attract the right attention, users can be handsomely rewarded.
While Roblox has faced heat in the past for allegedly “exploiting” these creators, the platform has since become a lot more creator-friendly. For instance, it recently announced that it will be sharing more revenue (between 50% and 70%) with the creators of “experience” games. The app also announced an affiliate link program to help users make further money.
In its latest earnings call (via Tubefilter), Roblox revealed that in Q4 alone, it paid out $280 million to creators. Combined with the rest of the year, this means that it paid out nearly $930 in total.
Because Roblox takes 30-50% of revenue from products creators sell, a buzzing creator economy benefits them, too. The company revealed that in Q4, it earned $988.2 million, a 32% year-on-year increase. Moreover, Roblox expects a slight revenue boost between $990 million and $1 billion for Q1 2025.
Matt Curtis, Roblox‘s VP of Developer Relations, added: “We are continuously investing in growing our economy to further expand opportunities for creators, from professional studios to individual content creators, digital clothing designers, and brands–already estimated at nearly 18,000 full-time job equivalents just in the U.S. between 2017 and 2023.”
In 2023, Roblox paid out $741 million to creators, up from $623.9 million in 2022. As this number continues to grow at an astronomical rate, it is clear that creators are more important to Roblox than ever.
