People always say the influencer world is dystopian, but we didn’t expect it to have this much gore. “Sissy,” starring actress Aisha Dee, follows the titular character as she [spoiler alert] goes on a murderous rampage at a bachelorette party.
So, pretty standard horror stuff. But what differentiates this movie from your run-of-the-mill slasher is that Sissy is a wellness influencer.
What’s the movie Sissy about?
As the “Sissy” movie unfolds, we learn how living life chronically online has warped Sissy to the point where she really would benefit from touching some grass, but decides to kill people instead.
One especially striking scene in the movie includes Sissy guiding her followers through a meditation while, unbeknownst to them, she is actually burying a person’s body.
It’s scenes like that and the dichotomy of the film that has made it a critical darling. It has a rare 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In an interview with Eye For Film about the “Sissy” movie, director Kane Senes said, “I think where it started from was just looking at how crazy our world’s getting, and the anxieties that we have that our generation and the generation after us is dealing with.”
“And you know, what role social media plays in all of that, and this increasing need to find that kind of ‘safe space’ in such a crazy world. And there’s this idea of presenting a façade to the world or a kind of constructed identity that we can hide behind when everything else out there is so uncertain and scary.”
Since premiering at SXSW 2022, the movie has been distributed by horror streaming service Shudder. However, “Sissy” first came on our radar recently following a report by Collider.
It joins the likes of “Ingrid Goes West” and “Not Okay” in the hall of fame of films that, while far-fetched at times, do kind of hit the nail on the head when it comes to the dark side of the creator economy.
