Is there really a Twitch adpocalypse? As previously reported by Passionfruit, something strange is happening on Twitch. Creators have claimed that they are losing thousands of dollars worth of revenue, with many blaming the platform’s new political rhetoric label, which identifies and categorizes streams about political and social issues.
Amid troubling allegations related to streamers’ views on the Israel-Palestine conflict, Bloomberg reported that multiple companies pulled their ads from Twitch.
Now, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy has finally addressed these adpocalypse concerns in a Patch Notes broadcast on Dec. 4. During this broadcast, Clancy explained that rumors surrounding a reduction of ads for some political streamers are true, although he did not say the situation qualifies as an “adpocalypse.”
What did CEO Dan Clancy say about the rumored Twitch adpocalypse?
“For a period of time, there were a number [of advertisers] that were expressing concerns around being shown up near sensitive subjects in politics, and so we had reduced the ads there,” he explained. “Some people that were doing stuff around politics and sensitive social issues may have seen a reduction, because some advertisers weren’t running ads there.”
However, he stressed that this doesn’t equate to an adpocalypse. “I think there’s a lot of confusion. It’s absolutely the case that certain content does affect your ads.” he added.
“Our advertisers, at times, adjust their controls in terms of the content that they want to see. But in general, we have not seen this big shift.”
