With their livestreaming features, it’s not uncommon to say that YouTube and TikTok are formidable rivals to the streaming platform Twitch. However, one person who would disagree with you on that is Twitch CEO, Dan Clancy.

All the evidence points to these platforms potentially surpassing Twitch in the future. For example, many well-known streamers have made the leap from Twitch to YouTube, like Sykkuno, LilyPichu, and DrLupo. Meanwhile, TikTok surpassed Twitch in terms of hours watched at the beginning of the year, prompting Twitch to introduce vertical video features in an attempt to emulate the platform’s success.

What Did Dan Clancy Say?

But despite this, Clancy remains steadfast in his opinion, which he expressed to TheMediaLeader at TwitchCon.

“YouTube is designed — and I was there when they were making these decisions — where the foundation is related videos,” he explained. “As soon as your attention fades, you get something else. And of course TikTok does that even better — your attention fades and you swipe. You’re programmed to jump to the next thing on those platforms. That means you don’t stay a while.”

He also insisted that Twitch still has “untapped potential,” as he expressed his desire for more streamers outside the gaming genre.

“We have streamers of all types,” he said. “We want anybody that has a creative instinct to be able to create on Twitch. It’s not that we don’t love all the gaming stuff, but I think the need for community is universal.”
