VidCon Baltimore, a convention for creators scheduled for September 26 through 29, has now been canceled.
In an X post announcing the news, VidCon said: “We have made the difficult decision to cancel VidCon Baltimore 2024. We want to thank the city of Baltimore and all the fans and creators who attended the East Coast event last year and hope to see everyone in Anaheim next summer.”
The announcement came suddenly, with the convention still promoting the Baltimore event six days before. In the post, VidCon promised to refund ticket-holders “in full” by July 19.
Why was VidCon Baltimore canceled?
But for some creators, the promise of a refund wasn’t enough, as the reasons for why the event was canceled remain unclear.
“At least give an explanation, the people who bought plane tickets and hotels already deserve at least that,” one creator wrote.
“Not all of us have the money to spend to fly out to Anaheim, East Coast creators really are cooked bro,” another added.
VidCon — which has taken place in Anaheim, California, since 2010 — had its first East Coast event in Baltimore in 2023. But some creators say they were let down by the new location and its accommodations.
“As someone who went to Anaheim and was a little disappointed and have heard the disappointment of Baltimore, I understand,” one creator said. “I personally look forward to one large amazing experience than two average. Focus your money and efforts on the one main event.”
This news comes shortly after Paramount, VidCon’s owner, merged with Skydance Media on July 9. Though the “New Paramount” said it wants to be “creator-friendly” in its future, what will happen to VidCon remains unclear.
News also leaked in April 2024 that Paramount was considering selling VidCon to a new buyer.
At the time of writing, it looks like VidCon Anaheim 2025 and Mexico 2024 are both still going ahead. But it remains to be seen whether creators will get the answers they seek.
