This week on Passionfruit, platforms lead the news. From a new scheme being introduced by Kickstarter to some intriguing figures from both Snapchat and TikTok, there’s a lot to catch up on.

However, if you’re a little platformed-out, this recap also includes a couple of long-form pieces. These include an article on managing stress and a dispatch from the once-prestigious White House Correspondents’ Dinner. So, if you want to stay in the know, keep reading.

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is Dead. Creators Are Building What’s Next

Liz Plank

Our very own Liz Plank attended the White House Correspondents’ Dinner recently. However, the once-prestigious event was reportedly a shadow of its former self. The President himself had skipped the event to attend the Pope’s funeral, and the comedian was banned, leaving the event an “empty stage with catered food.”

Primarily, as Plank points out, this is because the real parties were being held elsewhere. From a Substack party to Adam Faze’s invite-only dinner, what this shows is that the media and zeitgeist have firmly moved on.

In a new earnings report, Snap revealed some exciting news. Snapchat’s daily active users have hit 460 million, with the platform adding 38 million users in the past year. Moreover, Snap’s quarterly revenue hit $1.36 billion, with a 14% year-on-year increase.

The best part? These two figures are higher than analysts’ projections. However, Snap isn’t out of the woods just yet. Its shares dropped by 13%. The company is also rolling back on its plans for a TikTok-inspired redesign for the app.

TikTok might be unstable now, but the app is looking firmly towards the future. And it looks like livestreaming is gonna play a pretty big role in that. During a New York mixer, which included creators among its attendees, speakers for the platform announced that creators were pulling in $10 million per day exclusively through livestreaming.

Speakers Yannick Luna, TikTok Live’s US social agency lead, and Merzia Cutlerywala, creator network growth manager at TikTok Live, also announced that in the last 30 days, TikTok Live creators earned $63 million in revenue.

Clearly, livestreaming is a very lucrative pursuit for creators on the app. To find out more, click here.

Creators and small business owners who rely on Chinese manufacturing/materials have been hugely impacted by the tariffs. There’s no question about that. Luckily, Kickstarter is doing something about it. The platform, which enables people to crowdfund their passion projects, announced that it is launching a ‘Tariff Manager.’ This works by allowing content creators to apply a surcharge to certain items.

Given that Chinese tariffs have increased by 104%, this scheme will likely be a godsend to countless creators — the only question that remains is whether they’ll be willing to pay it.
