AI Overviews have become a core component of Google. These days, when you search for something on Google, the platform uses LLM Gemini to generate summaries from the websites in the search results.
In some ways, this has been helpful. But in other ways, it has been a source of frustration. This is because he tool has become notorious for getting things wrong, meaning that you have to take everything these summaries say with a grain of salt.
So, how will YouTube’s AI overview be any different? Well, unlike Google, YouTube will display a carousel of videos that appear after entering specific search queries.
“This new feature will use AI to highlight clips from videos that will be most helpful for your search query, “Google said in a post on YouTube Community Forums.
“This is most likely to show when you search for more information about products you’re shopping for (such as ‘best noise cancelling headphones’), or when you search for more information about locations or things to do in those locations (such as ‘museums to visit in San Francisco’).”
Currently, this test is being rolled out to a handful of YouTube Premium members in the US. As with all YouTube test features, it’s essential to keep in mind that there’s no guarantee this feature will be implemented. Perhaps Google will learn from its mistakes with its own AI summary feature. But if this feature means giving creators more exposure, we’re all for it.
