Yuki Sakuna, a vtuber based in Japan, has seemingly popped out of nowhere. However, she’s quickly gathered hype following her viral debut YouTube stream on Oct. 27.
Despite her debut being just days ago, she’s already amassed 857,000 subscribers. Meanwhile, the YouTube view count for her inaugural stream currently stands at 3.7 million views.
Japanese site Vtuber Stats speculated that Sakuna’s stream was purportedly ranked the number-one most-watched vtuber debut, and, overall, the third most-watched vtuber stream. (Passionfruit was unable to independently verify these figures.)
Who’s the creator behind Yuki Sakuna?
Previously, the creator behind Sakuna was part of Hololive — a Japanese vtuber agency that oversees the direction and branding of (mostly female) vtubers. Under Hololive, this creator took on the identity of a vtuber called Minato Aqua.
After Aqua “graduated” from streaming in August, the creator behind Aqua rebranded all her social media accounts to reflect Sakuna.
So, while the debut, record-breaking live stream is impressive, it’s worth noting that Sakuna’s accounts had the strong foundation of Aqua’s previous audience to build from.
Sakuna isn’t the only vtuber to attract attention recently. Earlier in October, Twitch streamer Ironmouse became the most-subscribed Twitch streamer ever, which, in conjunction with this, can only mean one thing: 2024 is the year of the vtuber.
