After Donald Trump was re-elected as President on Nov. 5, stocks, shares, and cryptocurrency all faced immediate impacts. When it comes to social media platforms, it also appears that a mass X-odus might be occurring.
According to Sky News, Bluesky has added 700,000 new members in the past week. Founded by Twitter head Jack Dorsey, the Bluesky platform is arguably the most successful X alternative so far.
Why are users leaving X for Bluesky?
As for X, there’s been a steady decline in users going on for a while. The Financial Times reported in September 2024 that X has lost one-fifth of its daily active user base.
While it’s unclear how the election might have impacted X’s active user numbers among right-leaning users, many left-leaning users are saying Trump’s reelection is the straw that broke the camel’s back.
After all, Elon Musk hasn’t been shy about endorsing the controversial Republican leader. He even co-hosted an interview on X with Trump back in August 2024. But apart from the growing right-wing presence on the app, this seems to have alienated a number of regular users.
As for Bluesky, a platform spokesperson told Sky News: “We’re excited to welcome all of these new people, ranging from Swifties to wrestlers to city planners.”
