For online artists, ensuring your work is credited can feel like you’re fighting a losing battle. But it looks like Adobe is considering a new tool that may make this battle a lot easier.
Entitled “Project Know How,” the tool was announced during the Sneaks segment at Adobe Max, which shows experimental tools and features that might become a fully-fledged tool in the future.
Project Know How is designed to identify artwork not just online, but on various IRL surfaces too. Examples include t-shirts, tote bags, tumblers, and posters.
How does Adobe’s Project Know How work?
Project Know How incorporates Adobe’s Content Credentials technology, which involves using a digital tag to track where exactly something has been posted online. This tag can also identify who owns this content, and whether it has been digitally manipulated.
So long as an image or video has Content Credentials applied, the tool will protect creators’ ownership of that content even if specific metadata related to authentication has been removed.
In a demo viewed by The Verge, the tool was able to identify Content Credentials just by recording the item in question on a camera. This was even true when the art was on “texture-heavy” items like tote bags.
However, as noted by The Verge, Adobe Sneaks aren’t necessarily guaranteed to become fully-fledged products. But if Project Know How is, it certainly offers a lifeline to creators.
