On Wednesday, Oct. 23, TikTok announced that it would make its STEM feed accessible for all users across the US, UK, and Ireland. This is significant because in the past the STEM feed was only displayed for under-18s. Other viewers would have to change their settings to turn the feature on in their feed.
Now, if users don’t want to see the feed, they’ll need to go into TikTok’s settings and head to the “content preferences” section.
According to TikTok, this expansion of the STEM feed will make it easier for users to find educational content in the app.
TikTok initially launched its STEM feed in March 2023 for US users. The feed was later expanded to European users in April 2024.
The short-form video company also noted (via TechCrunch) that since the launch of its STEM feed, STEM-related content on the app has increased by 18%. The platform also claims that videos in the STEM feed have reached 200 million views. The next step, TikTok claims, is to expand local language support.
In a post (via Social Media Today), TikTok said: “Whether it inspires people to pursue unexpected STEM careers, brings together aspiring engineers to work out formulas in comments sections, or helps a new programmer learn to code, the STEM feed provides a space for co-learning, inspiration, and enrichment.”
