Internet Culture is Just Culture

CREATOR NEWSLETTER

As news of a Trump presidency sinks in, businesses in the creator economy, from startups to tech titans, are bracing for potential regulatory policy changes in artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency, and cybersecurity. For those of us making an income from making things on the internet, it’s unclear how these changes will immediately impact our day-to-day lives or how we’ll have to reimagine our futures.

But for the most part, the online aftershocks of the election are still primarily focused on how and why we got here. This week for Passionfruit, reporter Steven Asarch explores how this election is the culmination of years of online radicalization, anxiety, and economic discontent, particularly among young men.

Trump’s political strategy continues on the legacy of Gamergate and the manosphere, which Asarch has covered first-hand as a digital culture journalist at both mainstream and indie news outlets. It’s clear that now, more than ever, we need journalists who understand the online world and how to navigate its darkest corners.

As Asarch puts it, “Online culture is just culture — the way we interact, speak, and live is now mainly through a glass screen we keep next to our car keys.”
