Reality shows are outlandish by nature. They push absurd personalities into the spotlight and encourage controversial behavior. But while on television, you have to adhere to the FCC’s rules, on the internet, anything is fair game.
That’s been more clear than ever with the rise of FishTank Live, an obscene reality show competition spearheaded by influencer provocateur Sam Hyde and his prank group Million Dollar Extreme. Viewers have watched as contestants, known as Fish, appear to be waterboarded, swatted, living in filth, and verbally abused by viewers over text-to-speech.
This week, Passionfruit contributor Steven Asarch shares everything you need to know about this dark corner of the internet. It’s a story that explores the most toxic characters online, something all creators should be wary of.

IN THE BIZ
- Elon Musk announced Twitter is purging accounts that have been inactive for “several years,” sparking concern over the future of accounts of those that have passed away or who were historically significant to Internet history. Musk then clarified that old accounts will be “archived” but their handles will be given away.
- A recent wave of copyright claims made by video game publisher Bethesda and its parent company Microsoft ahead of the game Redfall’s release last week resulted in the accidental removal of the game’s official Twitter account’s banner photo. The incident sparked debate about rampant copystrikes against creators.
- Igniting further debate, Ed Sheeran won a copyright case after being accused of stealing chords from a Marvin Gaye song, arguing the chords were “common building blocks.” Many said the decision was in favor of creators’ artistic freedom, while others said they were concerned about the protection of creators’ intellectual property.
- SoundCloud debuted a fan engagement tool that allows creators to see, sort through, and message their top fans. The announcement sparked interest in other platforms sharing similar top fan insights.
