Will a Car Accident Crash This Creator’s Career?

CREATOR NEWSLETTER

Happy Tuesday, y’all. I just got back from a brunch event at the World Trade Center in NYC co-hosted by Passionfruit, Teachable, What’s Trending, PRophet, and the Webby Awards, which recently launched a whole new set of awards categories for creators. The event’s goal, beyond bagels and orange juice, was to bring creators and brands together.

As journalists covering the creator ecosystem, we’re dedicated to seeing things from the creator’s perspective, not the corporate perspective. We are on the pulse of the troubling AI use cases and pay gaps that are haunting the creators and small businesses of the advertising ecosystem.

Being face-to-face with brand leaders is a good chance to remind people that, you know, we’re all human. More connects than divides us.

I got to meet a lot of different kinds of creators, whose expertise ran the gamut from election news to music production to selling nail extensions. Everyone was looking for new ways to engage with brands they actually like and whose products they actually use. All in all, it was a refreshing morning (though, disclosure: I did enjoy the free orange juice.)

That being said, it’s time to make a bit of a jarring transition to probably one of the worst stories on the internet this week — this 20-year-old influencer who crashed his car while using his phone live streaming, and then decided to keep the stream going as blood was dripping down his brother’s face.

What a way to kick off the week.
