After much hype, OpenAI has finally released Sora, its artificial intelligence video generator. The controversial feature, which has already caused panic and protest in the creator economy, is available for those with a premium subscription to ChatGPT.
Sora was previously in its research phase, but is now available to the public.
What can we expect from OpenAI’s Sora?
According to OpenAI, these Sora videos can be generated up to 1080p resolution, and up to 20 seconds long. These videos can be made in widescreen, square, and vertical aspect ratios.
However, in a blog post, OpenAI revealed that only a handful of previously invited testers will be able to use Sora to make videos of humans. This, the company explained in the post, is “to address concerns around misappropriation of likeness and deepfakes.”
OpenAI also stressed that it is blocking sexual deepfakes and child sexual abuse material from the program, and added that uploads of people “will be limited at launch” as it “refines” its “deepfake mitigations.”
According to The Independent, Sora’s launch prompted so much interest that OpenAI has temporarily stopped the creation of new accounts.
“We hope this early version of Sora will enable people everywhere to explore new forms of creativity, tell their stories, and push the boundaries of what’s possible with video storytelling,” OpenAI said in its blog post. “We’re excited to see what the world will create with Sora.”
