From August 5, Patreon is updating its pricing. As announced in a blog post, the platform is combining its Pro and Premium plans into a single plan, which involves Patreon taking 10% of creator earnings rather than 12% from Premium users and 8% from Pro users.
However, while this is a significant price rise for new Patreon users, existing users will not be affected, nor will anyone who signs up for Pro or Premium plans before the August 4 cut-off.
Moreover, if new users want access to some of the old Premium tier features, they’ll have to purchase an add-on. For those with this add-on, Patreon will take an additional 3% of their earnings.
At present, Patreon’s Premium plan offers a myriad of features. These include access to merchandise options, team accounts, coaching, and support staff. But don’t worry — all these features, bar merchandise options, will be part of the new standard plan. However, merch options will return in the form of an additional optional add-on, and cost you an additional 3% of revenue.
And this isn’t the only update coming to Patreon. The platform is also updating video pricing. Originally, Patreon users had access to 500 free lifetime video hours. This was later reduced to 100 hours, but soon, creators will be able to access 100 video hours per month.
“Since we last updated our prices six years ago, Patreon has expanded beyond just payments to include media hosting, community, and discovery,” the platform said in the blog post.
“Chat messages between creators and their fans are growing 63% year over year, in the past year fans viewed over 80 million hours of Patreon video, creators are going live daily, and Patreon’s discovery ecosystem is driving over $200 million to creators per year. We’re updating our pricing for new creators to continue offering even more tools to help you grow and connect.”
