The 2024 US presidential election has already been dubbed “the podcast election.” In a bid to appeal to younger voters, both candidates, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, took the unprecedented step of appearing on podcasts throughout their campaign trail.
Trump campaigner and UFC head Dana White even mentioned Joe Rogan — the man behind Spotify’s biggest podcast — in his Trump victory speech. But for Spotify, this is just the beginning.
Trump will be inaugurated for a second time on Jan. 20, and the streaming service is making sure that its presence is felt. According to Bloomberg, Spotify is planning to host a brunch and set up a pop-up podcast studio for creators on Inauguration Day.
Why is Spotify having an Inauguration Day brunch?
Insiders told Bloomberg that Spotify has already sent invites out to podcasters. An invitation viewed by the publication says that the brunch celebrates “the power of podcasts in this election.” Bloomberg also reports that logistics for both these events are yet to be finalized.
This move by the streaming service demonstrates just how important the creator economy has become in the political arena. Moreover, it shows how young people are consuming news in entirely new ways than their predecessors. It paves the way for politics to become more social-first in a bid to reach that all-important youth vote.
