As the US Appeals Court squashes TikTok’s appeal over the “ban or sell” law, creators are officially in panic mode. It’s now just over 1 month until the law’s deadline for TikTok to cut ties with its China-based parent company, ByteDance, comes into effect. If this deadline isn’t met, the US government will enforce a ban on the app starting Jan. 19, 2025.
For the many creators who have established a platform on the app, this could be catastrophic for them. This is why, according to Reuters, creators are encouraging followers to follow them on alternative platforms like YouTube and Instagram.
What are TikTok creators saying about the ban?
The future looks uncertain for many creators, with political influencer Chris Mowrey telling Reuters: “For the first time, I’m realizing that a lot of what I worked for could disappear.”
In addition to this, Mowrey, who has 470,000 TikTok followers, added, “I don’t think it’s been talked about enough how damaging it will be from an economic standpoint for small businesses and creators.”
Moreover, in a video, fellow creator Chris Burkett, who has 1.3 million views, admitted that he was unsure about TikTok’s staying power. “I don’t think there’s longevity on this app in the United States,” he said.
Furthermore, creator @SnipingForDom, who has 898,000 followers, told viewers that “we’ve put so many years and so much time into building our community here,” before encouraging them to follow him on Instagram.
These creators’ last hope is TikTok’s planned Supreme Court appeal. This is where TikTok tried to file a temporary injunction to try and stop the ban. We will have to see if this will be successful.
