Earlier this month, a reverse engineer found evidence that TikTok is gearing up to share its own photos app. And now, a company spokesperson has confirmed to Passionfruit that “TikTok Notes” is definitely being developed in testing.
Rumors surrounding the existence of TikTok’s Instagram competitor reached a fever pitch on March 7 after a Threads user posted a screenshot of a pop-up users were allegedly getting on TikTok photo posts in the app.
“TikTok Notes, a new app for photo posts, is coming soon,” the pop-up read. “Your existing and future public TikTok photo posts will be shown on TikTok Notes.” The pop-up also included a toggle, which allows users to opt in or out of adding their content to the app.
In a statement to Passionfruit, a TikTok spokesperson said: “As part of our continued commitment to innovating the TikTok experience, we’re exploring ways to empower our community to create and share their creativity with photos and text in a dedicated space for those formats.”
So… did TikTok just soft-launch its photo app to us? Well, kinda. The spokesperson also made it clear that the app isn’t available yet. It’s unclear if or when TikTok will roll out the app more broadly.
But TikTok added that they’re always looking to test new user experiences. These test prototypes can sometimes end up being quite different by the time you get to the finished product. So while TikTok Notes might not be a permanent addition, it’s at least on its way in testing.
