Instagram has launched a range of new features to further customize DM conversations with friends. As of September 6, users will be able to add text, stickers, and drawings to photos from their camera roll. Or, if they’re feeling especially creative, users can create a cutout from these photos and videos to share via DMs.

And that’s not all: there will also be new birthday Notes to help you celebrate that special day with a neat confetti animation, along with birthday cake effects on their profile pictures. Finally, a range of new chat themes will be available for users, although Instagram didn’t specify exactly what these themes are.

New Instagram features feel a dime a dozen as of late. We’ve had the introduction of Notes, comments on Instagram stories, and the ‘Favorite Song’ feature: a Myspace-like feature that allows users to select a song that they think best represents their vibe on their Instagram profile.

There’s also potentially other Instagram features on the way, as reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi recently noticed a feature that allowed users to “share continuously” what songs they were listening to on Spotify.

As of April 2024, Instagram has more than 2 billion active users, so it makes sense for the company to try and keep things fresh and exciting to keep those numbers up.
