During Roblox’s annual developers’ conference in San Franciso on Sept. 6, the company’s CEO, David Baszucki, announced that the app plans to share more revenue with creators. In addition, Roblox announced that it is launching a new creator affiliate link program and a generative AI tool.
Specifically, creators who have made “experience” games on the platform will soon be able to keep 50-70% of the revenue from paid titles. However, for now, this will only apply to those bought with real money on desktop computers.
These “experiences” can be priced by creators at $9.99, $29.99, and $49.99. According to a blog post from Roblox, creators will receive a 50%, 60%, and 70% revenue split, respectively, for those three prices. The platform says the new pricing options will roll out “this year.”
This pivot in strategy makes the company’s existing revenue-sharing program, which gives developers 30% of the “Robux” in-game currency revenue for freemium titles, pale in comparison.
During the conference, CEO Baszucki said that, eventually, the company wants to expand this program to “experiences” bought on devices like game consoles and cell phones.
“We believe we’re setting the groundwork for a more expansive range of type of content on the platform,” Baszucki said in an interview with The Verge.
He then went on to say that there’s “a huge effort within the company to support 100-plus-player open-world sports or battle royale-type experiences on low-end devices.”
What else did Roblox announce at the 2024 Developers Conference?
But that’s not the only new way creators can make money on Roblox. The platform also announced a new affiliate link program at this year’s Developers Conference.
Creators accepted into this affiliate program can earn up to 50% of Robux purchases made by new users within six months of joining from their sign-in link. However, this is capped at $100.
During this conference, Roblox also announced that it’s working on a 3D foundational AI model. This multimodal and open-source model will help creators generate a range of 3D content, including text and video.
In an interview with TechCrunch about the model, Roblox chief product officer Manuel Bronstein said: “A creator could say, ‘I want to create a world that is in the Scottish Highlands with castles and a stormy day, with a dragon background,’ and ‘I want all of this in a steampunk steam style,’ and then the output will be the full scene creation.”
