IN THE BIZ
- Eight TikTok creators have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government, challenging a law that could ban TikTok unless its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, sells its U.S. assets, arguing that the ban violates their First Amendment rights and that a sale is impractical.
- TikTok is testing an “AI Smart Search” feature that generates AI-driven search results, providing users with content such as product recommendations and recipes relevant to their search terms, though it appears to be in the early stages of rollout.
- Reddit has relaunched its awards system, allowing users to buy gold and give awards that earn creators karma, which can be converted to cash if they’re part of the Contributor Program, now expanded to 35 countries.
- Creators have begun the “Celebrity BlockOut 2024” campaign, which encourages social media users to block celebrities who aren’t using their platforms to address important issues, sparked by backlash against influencer Haley Kalil’s insensitive remarks.
